VPN for betting in Mongolia: the honest answer

What VPNs can and cannot do for betting access, why most operators ban VPN use, and what we actually recommend.

The question this page answers

"Can I use a VPN to access betting sites from Mongolia?" is the most common search that brings people to our site. The answer is nuanced and we will give you the real one, not the influencer version.

What changed in March 2025

Mongolia's Law on the Licensing of Gambling Activities, effective March 2025, prohibits paid sports betting and online gambling for Mongolian residents. See our legal notice for the full text. This site does not endorse or recommend circumventing that law. What follows is information about how VPNs work and the risks involved.

What a VPN actually does

A VPN reroutes your internet traffic through a server in another country, making it appear to the sites you visit that you are accessing from that country. For betting sites, this can bypass some IP-based geoblocks. It does not change your legal residence or nationality. Operators also use non-IP signals (device fingerprinting, payment method country, time zone, language headers) to detect VPN users.

Why operators ban VPN use

Nearly every sportsbook's terms of service prohibit VPN use. The reasons are regulatory (they cannot legally serve users in jurisdictions where they lack a licence) and commercial (VPN users are correlated with fraud and bonus abuse). Violations typically result in:

  • Winnings confiscated and account closed (most common)
  • Deposit refunded but winnings voided (less common)
  • Account flagged, normal play allowed, withdrawal blocked pending verification (sometimes)

What this means if you live in Mongolia

Using a VPN from Mongolia to access a sportsbook violates both the operator's terms and Mongolian law. If you deposit, win, and try to withdraw, the operator's KYC process (government ID, proof of address, card photos) will reveal Mongolian residence and the withdrawal will be refused. The deposit may or may not be returned.

We do not recommend this path. We list it here because you searched for it and we want you to know the real risk before you lose money.

The better path: move your residency or wait

If you expect to spend long periods outside Mongolia (study, work, family), open your sportsbook account when you are legally resident there, using local bank details. That account will remain valid during temporary returns to Mongolia, though most operators restrict access while you are in Mongolia.

If you are permanently resident in Mongolia, the honest answer is that offshore betting is not a viable path. Focus on the licensed lottery and the legal betting products that have historically operated in Mongolia.

What about Mongolian diaspora living abroad?

If you live outside Mongolia, you do not need a VPN. Your normal IP and residency are already in a jurisdiction where offshore books operate. See our diaspora guides for country-specific advice.
